Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
The effects of climate change – from changing weather patterns and more extreme weather events to rising sea levels – are impacting all countries, disrupting national economies and affecting people’s lives.
This SDG* has several 2030 targets to which every company can contribute. These targets aim to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries; integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning; and promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States.
Every Future-Fit Business must avoid slowing down progress toward this SDG by:
-
Using energy from renewable sources and actively encouraging suppliers to do the same.
This ensures that business operations do not contribute to the combustion of fossil fuels.
Learn more about Break-Even Goal 01 -
Procurement of goods and services does not hinder progress.
The environmental and social footprints of a company’s supply chain affect society’s progress towards many of the global challenges that the SDGs seek to address. By taking steps to increase the fitness of its supply chain, the company encourages actions that support the related SDGs.
Learn more about Break-Even Goal 04 -
Eliminating operational greenhouse gas emissions and actively encouraging suppliers to do the same.
this ensures that the business contributes fairly to reaching global decarbonization targets if and only if its decarbonization trajectory aligns with best-available guidance.
Learn more about Break-Even Goal 06 -
Ensuring operations do not encroach on ecosystems or communities and actively encouraging suppliers to do the same.
This ensures that the physical presence of business operations do not undermine the resilience of local communities to climate-related hazards and natural disasters (e.g. by protecting natural flood defences, eliminating deforestation).
Learn more about Break-Even Goal 08 -
Eliminating product greenhouse gas emissions.
This ensures that all energy-consuming products can be powered by renewable energy, and do not rely on the consumption of fossil fuels.
Learn more about Break-Even Goal 18 -
Investing in assets that do not hinder progress.
The environmental and social footprints of a company’s investments affect society’s progress towards many of the global challenges that the SDGs seek to address. By taking steps to increase the fitness of its financial assets, the company encourages actions that support the related SDGs.

Any Future-Fit Business may actively speed up progress toward this SDG by:
-
Ensuring others generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Enabling others to reduce greenhouse gas emissions accelerates progress towards combating climate change.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 06 -
Ensuring greenhouse gases are removed from the atmosphere.
Sequestering atmospheric greenhouse gases accelerates progress towards combating climate change.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 07 -
Ensuring others cause less ecosystem degradation.
Preventing the degradation of ecosystems which act as natural buffers against weather shocks prevents an increase in vulnerability to climate change related impacts.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 12 -
Ensuring ecosystems are restored.
Restoring ecosystems which act as natural buffers against weather shocks, reduces impacts associated with climate change.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 13 -
Ensuring people's capabilities are strengthened.
Improving education, awareness-raising and capacities for climate change mitigation and adaptation, strengthening people's resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 17 -
Strengthening infrastructure in pursuit of future-fitness.
Developing quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure removes barriers to wellbeing and protects the health of the environment.
Learn more about Positive Pursuit 21 -
Strengthening governance in pursuit of future-fitness.
Ensuring governance is accountable, participatory, responsive, responsible and transparent removes barriers to wellbeing and protects the health of the environment.
