Earth Day 2021: What kind of future do you want to see?

By Joanna Robertson

If you want to build a ship, don’t call people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.

At Future-Fit, this has been our busiest year yet. We’ve been hosting fascinating conversations, growing our communityand creating tools to transform businesses large and small. Around us, momentum is growing in the build-up to COP26, with Net Zero commitments and calls for transformation springing up from corporates and investors alike.

But this Earth Day, we want to take a step back from the detail and remind ourselves of where we want to go – and what really needs to change if we’re going to get there.

Our vision is a Future-Fit Society. One in which our planet can breathe, because the environment is free from pollution and ecosystems are protected. One in which people have the capacity and opportunity to lead fulfilling lives, because hunger and poverty are things of the past. One in which waste does not exist, water is responsibly used and all energy is renewable. And one in which our social norms, governance systems and understanding of economic growth drive the pursuit of a flourishing society, in harmony with a flourishing natural world.

Our vision of an environmentally restorative, socially just and economically inclusive future may sound like an unobtainable utopia – but it’s not. It’s a vision shared by global governments, who set out the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the framework to guide global progress toward this end.

Trade and commerce has long been at the heart of a thriving society. But in a world where consumption in one place causes scarcity in another, where encroachment on the natural world leads to extreme weather and unpredictable events, and where workplaces value profit above human wellbeing, something has gone wrong.

Put simply, our economic system is failing to meet the needs of hundreds of millions of people around the world. Our economy should solve the world’s biggest problems, not cause them.

So this Earth Day, lift your head out of the detail of your day-to-day, and ask: what kind of world do you want to see? And how are you going to get there?

We’d love to join you on the journey.

Get in touch to find out how your business could become truly regenerative and restorative, and how we can help you play your part in creating a flourishing future for all.
