The Kiwifruit Breeding Centre commenced operations in October 2021 with the goal of introducing novel varieties of kiwifruit excellence to a global audience. Employing state-of-the-art technology and natural breeding methodologies, this New Zealand-based company is dedicated to crafting superior versions of the most flavourful and nutritious kiwifruit. Its team of over 60 professionals is committed to producing healthier, more delectable, and environmentally sustainable kiwifruit varieties.
A collaborative venture between Zespri and the Bioeconomy Science Institute, the Kiwifruit Breeding Centre is 50:50 joint venture that emerged as a natural progression from the highly successful 30-year collaboration between Zespri and Bioeconomy Science Institution – Plant & Food Research Group. This partnership yielded the world-renowned SunGold Kiwifruit variety, alongside Zespri RubyRed.
Funded jointly by the parent organisations, the Centre ensures that any future new varieties resulting in commercialization will lead to shared royalties. The Chair of the Kiwifruit Centre Board is David Hughes, a seasoned director in the agrifood and innovation sector, and the former CEO of Plant & Food Research. Other board members include Nathan Flowerday and Andrew Dunstan representing Zespri, and Candace Kinser and Dr Gavin Ross representing the Bioeconomy Science Institute.
Dr. Matt Glenn, the Kiwifruit Breeding Centre’s first Chief Executive Officer, brings valuable experience to the role. Formerly in an executive position with Quayside Holdings, the commercial investment arm of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Dr. Glenn also served as the CEO of Hill Laboratories, New Zealand’s leading analytical testing laboratory. Earlier in his career, he held positions at Fonterra, Balance Agri-nutrients, and Genesis Research and Development.
